Learn to identify a range of common forest birds using the Department of Conservation's five-minute bird count protocol.
In this course, you will develop practical skills in identifying a range of common forest birds found in Aotearoa, New Zealand, using the five-minute bird count (5MBC) protocol, a widely recognised monitoring method used by the Department of Conservation and many community conservation groups across the country.
You will gain an understanding of best-practice approaches for consistent data collection, recording, and storage, and make the data available for analysis, reporting, and subsequent operational planning within the required timeframe.
As part of the course, you are required to complete pre-learning before attending the workshop via an online programme using pre-recorded bird calls, to help you identify common forest bird species. Pre-learning is essential to completing the course successfully.
Please take note of the workshop dates as they differ from the course start date. Also, online enrolments for our courses close on the course start date.
